Webinar: Chemistry issues of water-cooled generators and other electrical machines

27 May 2026 14:00 to 15:00

Online

David Addison, Chair of the Power Cycle Chemistry Working Group (PCC), has announced the next in the series of the International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) PCC Group webinars to be  presented by our esteemed IAPWS and PCC colleague  Dr Bobby Svoboda.

Our next webinar is on Chemistry issues of water-cooled generators and other electrical machines and is kindly hosted and supported by COMBINED CYCLE Journal (https://www.ccj-online.com)

Dr Bobby Svoboda is presently an independent consulting engineer in Power Plant Chemistry.

His work is concentrated on water chemistry, corrosion, and radiation technology, with emphasis on steam turbines, heat exchangers and steam/water cycles. Besides other, he has extensive experience with generator water cooling; since 1989 he has chemically cleaned more than 70 generators and has been responsible for another 80 generator cleanings.

With generator water cooling only a few problem areas related to corrosion and deposits have emerged in more than 70 years of history. With copper hollow conductors, the most common and severe problem is plugging of copper hollow conductors. Other problem areas, mainly limited to specific designs, are crevice corrosion between the brazing and the hollow conductors (“clip-to-strand leak”), plugging of strainers, and conductive deposits inside of insulating hoses. In addition, features and experiences with stainless steel hollow conductors will be given. This webinar addresses those problems and gives guidance for avoidance from the IAPWS Technical Guidance Document which can be downloaded here - https://iapws.org/documents/techguide/Generator

This webinar refers to water-cooled generators as well as other electric machines, for example water cooled magnets or rectifiers.

There will be an opportunity to submit questions during the webinar that Bobby and the PCC team will do their best to answer at the end.

When: May 27, 2026 2:00 PM London/UTC
